Many young adults with ADD/ADHD and spectrum disorders have made it through school but find the transition to independent living and the workplace highly frustrating due to the increased social demands at an adult level. 
 
Can you get a job but have trouble keeping a job? Are you feeling misunderstood and not sure why you're not able to "connect" with co-workers? If so, we can help you with a social skill strategy.
 
The PEERS© program offers a solid social skill awareness foundation on which to base social-emotional learning and further exploration of adult social situations.
 
PEERS© (Program of the Educational and Enrichment of Relational Skills) is an evidence based program developed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).  This program is designed to help young adults who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety and other social impairments by teaching validated social skills.  It is important to know that extensive academic research has been done with the PEERS©  program and the outcomes have been found to be positive.
 

Young adults develop an understanding of the hidden rules of social interactions by learning the basic “do’s and don’ts” coupled with the reasoning behind every rule.  We teach concrete steps for each social skill.  It becomes clear to the young adult  that those concrete steps – which many are not aware of – exist in the social world.

What to expect:

This is a powerful, well-defined skills training workshop where you will develop an ability to make new acquaintances and develop closer friendships
Your regular attendance and participation is required for progress to be made
You may be expected to do light "homework" assignments

  • Conversational Skills I and II
  • Rules for two-way conversations
  • Choosing "appropriate" friends 
  • Appropriate use of humor
  • Establishing get-to-gethers or meetings
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Rejection I and II
  • Teasing and embarrassing feedback
  • Bullying and bad reputations
  • Handling Disagreements
  • Rumors and Gossip
  • Managing communications 

 

What NOT to expect:

This is not a support group or offering of diagnosis for psychological disorders or developmental issues. 

Social Motion Skills offers job coaching and life coaching training to further support individuals seeking full independence.
